Install Office 2013 using USB storage and Click-to-Run

Using the Office Deployment Tool with Click-to-Run, organizations can download Office 2013 installation files once and install it on many computers from that location. This video walk-through with blog post outlines how to use the Office Deployment Tool to install Office 2013 a using USB storage key.

To install Office 2013 using USB storage and Click-to-Run, we need to complete four steps:

  • Download the Office Deployment Tool (ODT)
  • Configure the XML file for the ODT
  • Download Office 2013 with the ODT
  • Install Office 2013 with the ODT

The steps are very similar to the steps for installing from a server and network share. The main difference is that the “SourcePath” is not present in the configuration.xml file.  Simply put, when you run the Office Deployment Tool from your USB storage, it will download the Office 2013 source files an also install from there too.

Full instructions for these steps can be found – http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219422.aspx

Steps

1. Download the ODT

Download from the Microsoft Download Centre and extract to your USB storage/key.

2. Adjust your configuration.xml file

Adjust the file to download and install Office 2013 from the USB storage.

Configuration_Local.xml example code

<Configuration>

<!–  Config file used to download to a local drive/folder/usb storage and install from it. No SourcePath is specified –>

<Add OfficeClientEdition=”32″ >

<Product ID=”O365ProPlusRetail”>

<Language ID=”en-us” />

</Product>

</Add>

<Updates Enabled=”TRUE” UpdatePath=”” />

<Display Level=”Full” AcceptEULA=”TRUE” />

<Property Name=”AUTOACTIVATE” Value=”1″ />

<!–  <Logging Name=”OfficeSetup.txt” Path=”%temp%” />  –>

</Configuration>

3. Download the Office 2013 source files

You’ll only have to do this once to get the latest build of Office 2013, then use it to install ad-hoc on 1 or more computers.

  1. Open a Command Prompt and change to the drive letter that has been assigned to your USB storage.
  2. Type Setup.exe /download configuration.xml

4. Install Office 2013 from the USB storage

  • Open a Command Prompt and change to the drive letter that has been assigned to your USB storage.
  • Type Setup.exe /configure configuration.xml

Tips

I have two configuration XML files for different purposes

  1. configuration_network.xml – I use this XML file when I copy the source files and create a deployment point on a customers local file server.  I adjust the SourcePath accordingly.
  2. configuration_local.xml – I use this XML file when I want to install Office 2013 ad-hoc, on 1 or a few computers. I install directly from the USB key.
