Install Office 2013 using a network share and Click-to-Run

Office 2013 now uses Click-to-Run’s streaming technology to download and install. Office can be installed directly from the internet by logging into your Office 365 account and running the installation from the Downloads section. But there are other methods that can be adapted to different scenarios.

Using the Office Deployment Tool with Click-to-Run, organizations can download Office 2013 installation files once and install it on many computers from that location. The location can be a network share on a server, or for small workgroups, a network share on a desktop computer. The principles are still the same. Furthermore, Office will install from that local network share, streaming using Click-to-Run without the need for setting up any additional services.

The Click-to-Run version of Office 2013 uses an Office 365 account to activate, if your Office 365 account is licensed to use Office 2013. Even when installing from a network share, Office 2013 uses your Office 365 account to activate, Activation will use 1 of the 5 “device” activations and can be managed from your Office 365 account.

To install Office 2013 using a network share and Click-to-Run, we need to complete four tasks:

  1. Create or use an existing network share
  2. Download and configure the Office Deployment Tool (ODT).
  3. Download Office 2013 with the ODT
  4. Install Office 2013 with the ODT

Create or use an existing network share

This is a simple task that most of you know how to achieve. The main thing to note is the computer name and share name where you will be creating the Office deployment point, (\ComputernameShare). These will both be used to configure the Office Deployment Tool.

  • Create or reuse a network share
  • Assign the appropriate permissions to the share. Read Access for Everyone, or the specific group that are authorized to install Office

Instructions for creating a share can go into some depth. But the main points are that the share service is running and you have assigned the permissions to access the share.

Downloading and configuring the Office Deployment Tool (ODT)

The Office Deployment Tool is key to downloading and deploying Office 2013 with Click-to-Run. With a few basic steps, you can create a simple deployment point.

Download Office Deployment Tool – http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36778

  1. Download the tool and extract it’s contents to your network share. This will be a setup.exe file and configuration.xml file.
  2. Edit the configuration.xml file (Right-Click, Open With, Notepad.) – view this video to understand
  3. There will be some sample text in this file, commented out so it wont run. I suggest using the following text for the simplest deployment. A full reference of the different configuration file options can be found at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219426.aspx
    Sample text for configuration.xml file:

    </Configuration>
    1. Change the ComputerName and Share to match your deployment point.
    2. Updates are enabled. By leaving the UpdatePath with no setting “”, Office 2013 will get Office updates from Microsoft’s Content Delivery Network (CDN). Optionally, you can use \ComputerNameShare and Office will periodically check your deployment point for updates. If you choose this method, you will need to also periodically download the latest build of Office to receive the updates.
    3. Display Level is set to “Full”, to reduce confusion for people installing and give an indication for installation progress. Over the local network, you’ll be up and running in a matter of minutes while the rest of Office installs in the background.
    4. Logging is always good, even if you don’t understand it, you can pass the logs onto someone who can.
  4. Save and close the configuration.xml file.

Downloading Office 2013 with the ODT.

It’s easiest to complete these steps from the computer where you have created the network share / deployment point.

  1. Open a command prompt and change to the drive and directory of the deployment point. This should be where you have the setup.exe and configuration.xml file. i.e D:DataSoftware
  2. To download Office 2013 from Microsoft’s Content Delivery Network, type:
    setup.exe /download configuration.xml
  3. Downloading time will vary, depending on your internet connection. The Office 2013 build is approx. 1GB.
  4. This will create a folder structure in your deployment point. Within the Data folder, a folder will be created for the latest build of Office, with the build number to identify the folder. When you repeat the download process in a few months, you are likely to download a new build of Office and a new corresponding folder will be created. This will allow you have control over what build to install locally, for testing before releasing to your organization.

Installing Office 2013 with the ODT.

These steps are performed from the computer where you are installing Office 2013.

  1. Map a drive to the deployment point.
  2. Open a command prompt and change to the drive and directory of the deployment point. This should be where you have the setup.exe and configuration.xml file. i.e D:DataSoftware
  3. To install Office 2013 from your deployment point, type:
    setup.exe /configure configuration.xml

Some people take one look these instructions and when they see a configuration file that looks like “programming”, they immediately panic or give up.
Hopefully this blog post has helped you understand the Office Deployment Tool better, how it can be used to take advantage of the streaming features of Click-to-Run, when deploying Office 2013 to multiple computers.
